Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has made a startling claim, saying that India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had planned to build the Babri Masjid using public funds. However, it was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who thwarted the proposal, Singh revealed at a gathering in Gujarat. According to Singh, Nehru wanted to use public funds to build the Babri Masjid, but Patel opposed the idea. Singh also claimed that Nehru had suggested using funds collected for a memorial to Patel for building wells and roads, instead of a memorial itself. Singh hailed Patel as a true liberal and secular leader who never believed in appeasement. He said Patel's legacy has been suppressed by some forces, but the BJP-led government has worked to re-establish his importance. Singh also spoke about Patel's role in resolving the Kashmir issue and his approach to dialogue and diplomacy. He said Patel's vision of 'One India, Best India' has been strengthened by the Modi government's efforts. The Defence Minister also credited PM Narendra Modi for re-establishing Patel's legacy and honouring him with the Statue of Unity. Singh dismissed arguments that Patel was too old to become the Prime Minister, saying that Morarji Desai was over 80 when he became PM. Singh's remarks come as part of a 'Unity March' to commemorate Sardar Patel's 150th birth anniversary. The march, organised by the Gujarat government, will culminate at the Statue of Unity on December 6. Singh's claims about Nehru and Patel's differing views on the Babri Masjid and other issues have sparked a new debate about the country's history and the role of its leaders. While some have welcomed Singh's revelations, others have questioned the accuracy of his claims.
