A heated confrontation erupted at a Republic Day event in Karnataka's Gadag district on Monday, as State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil and BJP MLC S.V. Sankanur clashed over the newly introduced G RAM G employment scheme. The dispute began when Patil, in his Republic Day address, criticized the legislation, saying it would 'snatch employment opportunities from poor people.' Sankanur immediately objected, prompting a heated exchange between the two leaders. The confrontation escalated when Patil turned his criticism towards Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, accusing him of disrespecting the National Anthem and the Constitution. Sankanur intervened, urging Patil to focus on the country's development and not engage in politics. Patil maintained that he had a right to speak out against the Governor's actions, which he believed had insulted the Constitution. The dispute also highlighted the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Bill, known as G RAM G, which was passed by Parliament in December. The law promises 125 days of rural wage employment annually and replaces the two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. The legislation has been met with opposition from state governments, who argue that the Centre is shifting the financial burden of the employment programme to them. Despite the confrontation, the Republic Day event continued with flag-hoisting, cultural performances, and patriotic addresses. The district administration ensured that the event proceeded smoothly, though the dispute between Patil and Sankanur overshadowed the celebrations.
