The Supreme Court has urged the Centre to reconsider its decision to deport six individuals, who were sent to Bangladesh for being allegedly illegal immigrants. The court suggested a temporary measure to bring them back and provide a full hearing to prove their Indian citizenship. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed concerns that the Centre might have acted too hastily in deporting the individuals without a thorough investigation. The court noted that the Centre's own memo on immediate deportation requires an 'emergent situation,' which was absent in this case. The six individuals, including a mother and her two minor sons, were deported from Delhi to Bangladesh in June after being arrested by the police. However, the Calcutta High Court had ordered their return, citing evidence that their grandfathers' names were listed in the electoral roll of West Bengal. Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Sanjay Hegde, representing the petitioners, welcomed the Supreme Court's suggestion. The Centre will now take instructions on whether to bring the individuals back for a 'holistic hearing' by Monday. The Supreme Court's decision is seen as a victory for the petitioners, who claim to be Indian citizens and have been denied a fair hearing. The court's suggestion to provide a temporary measure to bring them back and prove their citizenship is a significant development in this case.
