The Supreme Court has ordered comedians Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, and others to use their platforms to raise funds for the treatment of persons with disabilities. This directive comes after the comedians were accused of making insensitive jokes about disabilities in a viral video. In response to a case filed by the CURE SMA Foundation, the apex court ordered the comedians to host at least two shows a month, featuring success stories of persons with disabilities. The goal is to generate funds for their treatment and promote awareness about rare disorders. The comedians were criticized for mocking a charity drive for a two-month-old baby with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which requires a ₹16 crore injection for treatment. Senior advocate Aparajita Singh argued that such insensitive content hinders fundraising efforts and damages the dignity of those with disabilities. The Supreme Court has directed the comedians to invite specially abled persons on their platforms, using their influence for the public good. They must also telecast programs about the success stories of persons with disabilities to generate funds and promote awareness. The court has refused to change its direction, despite the comedians' request to reconsider the order.
