New Delhi: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear several petitions, including one from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, on December 1, seeking an extension for mandatory registration of all waqf properties under the UMEED portal. The pleas were filed by the board, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, and other petitioners. The Supreme Court had earlier put on hold certain provisions of the Waqf Act, 2021, including a clause that only those practicing Islam for the last five years can create a waqf. However, it refused to stay the entire law, citing the presumption of constitutionality. The Centre launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal on June 6 to create a digital inventory of waqf properties. The portal requires all registered waqf properties across India to be mandatorily uploaded within six months. With the deadline nearing its end, the petitioners are seeking an extension to complete the registration process. The Supreme Court has listed the pleas for hearing on December 1, 2025.
