Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam has predicted a strong performance for his party in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, targeting 90-100 seats. Nirupam made his demand amid ongoing alliance talks with the BJP, which could potentially lead to a Mahayuti mayor in Mumbai. In a press conference, Nirupam criticized Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for allegedly betraying the party's founding ideals by partnering with the Congress and 'jihadi Muslims.' He claimed that this move is unacceptable to Marathi voters. Nirupam also stated that the BMC polls should follow the same formula as the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha elections, where the undivided Shiv Sena's seats were allocated to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. He estimated that around 60-65 of the 84 former Shiv Sena corporators have joined the Shinde-led party and were assured election tickets. Additionally, former corporators from other parties have also defected to the Shiv Sena. With a strong Shiv Sena presence, Nirupam believes that the party and the BJP can put up a united fight in the BMC polls. The BMC elections, along with those of 29 other civic bodies in Maharashtra, are scheduled for January 15.
