Karnataka's deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, traveled to Delhi on Wednesday, amidst a high-stakes power struggle in the state. But what appeared to be a routine trip turned out to be a visit to attend the wedding of a former bureaucrat's son, Sanjeev Kumar. Shivakumar's connection with Kumar dates back to his 50-day stint in Tihar jail in 2019, where they bonded over shared experiences. Kumar, a former Haryana IAS officer, had spent over a decade in jail over the state teacher recruitment scam. Before departing for Delhi, Shivakumar mentioned attending a wedding and a meeting at the Congress headquarters regarding a grand event on December 14 at Delhi's Ramleela Maidan on the 'Vote Chori' (vote theft) campaign. The event aims to mobilize Congress workers from across the state. In Karnataka, chief minister Siddaramaiah was in Mangaluru to commemorate the centenary of social reformer Sri Narayana Guru's meeting with Mahatma Gandhi. When asked about Shivakumar's trip, Siddaramaiah downplayed it, saying he would attend any meetings in Delhi only if he was invited. Shivakumar's stint in Tihar jail was a result of his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case. He was released on bail in October 2019 after the Delhi high court granted him bail. Shivakumar has spoken out about the unfairness of his incarceration, claiming he was targeted for not joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, a charge the party denies.
