A notorious history-sheeter, Manish alias Kariya, was arrested in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday after a dramatic shootout with the police. Kariya, a prime suspect in multiple cases, including three robberies and an assault on a police constable, was cornered by the police in the Dhanwahi and Achala forests. He attempted to flee on a motorcycle and opened fire, grazing the leg of constable Bholu Singh. The police retaliated, hitting Kariya in the leg, and he subsequently surrendered. Kariya, who had seven criminal cases, including two murder cases, registered against him, was ordered to leave the district in 2024 but returned this year after the order expired. The police have identified two other men involved in the robberies, but their names have not been released yet. Constable Chandrakant Tiwari, who was assaulted by Kariya and his gang on Wednesday night, remains in critical condition in a hospital in Jabalpur.
