A Singapore court was told that Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, 52, was severely intoxicated when he drowned in September last year, a day before he was set to perform at the North East India Festival. According to the chief investigating officer, Garg initially wore a life jacket but removed it and declined a second offer. Witnesses reported seeing Garg trying to swim back to the yacht before going limp and floating face-down in the water. Despite being rescued and receiving CPR, Garg was pronounced dead soon after. The Singapore police have denied any foul play in the case. The Assam government, however, suspects a conspiracy behind the singer's death and has arrested seven accused, including festival organizers and band members. A team of special public prosecutors has been appointed to expedite the proceedings and bring the accused to justice.
