A woman at the center of controversy surrounding the postponed wedding of cricketer Smriti Mandhana and composer Palash Muchhal has been subjected to a wave of online harassment, including violent threats and racist slurs. Mary D'Costa, the woman in question, recently clarified that screenshots of her chats with Muchhal, which went viral, were from April and that she had never met him. She also denied speculation that she was the reason for the wedding postponement. D'Costa shared screenshots of threatening messages she received over the past 24 hours, including violent threats, racial slurs, and misogynistic abuse. Several users accused her of seeking attention and blamed her for disrupting the high-profile wedding festivities. The messages were shared on her Instagram stories, where she expressed her shock and dismay at the level of hostility directed at her. The controversy began when Smriti Mandhana and Palash Muchhal's wedding was postponed due to Mandhana's father's health scare. Several unverified theories soon circulated on social media, including one that alleged screenshots of chats between D'Costa and Muchhal. D'Costa clarified that the chats were from April and lasted only for a month, and that she had never met Muchhal. The couple's wedding was scheduled to take place on November 23 in Sangli, Maharashtra, but was postponed after Mandhana's father was hospitalized. Muchhal was also admitted to a hospital due to exhaustion and stress. The postponement sparked speculation, with some users accusing D'Costa of being the reason for the disruption. In a statement, Palash Muchhal's cousin, Neeti Tak, urged people not to judge him amidst the ongoing speculation. Neither Smriti nor Palash has issued any direct statement on the postponement. Smriti's father remains under observation in a Sangli hospital.
