New Delhi: Retired NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has emphasized the need for international cooperation in space exploration, likening it to the collaborative efforts seen in Antarctica. During her first visit to India since returning to Earth after a nine-month stay on the International Space Station in 2024, Williams highlighted the importance of establishing 'rules of engagement' for space travel. Williams, who was part of a crewed mission on the Boeing Starliner, stressed that space work requires democratic collaboration among countries. She cited her experience on the ISS, where she witnessed the interconnectedness of our planet, as a pivotal moment in her understanding of global unity. "When you see the planet as one, you realize that every person, animal, and plant is connected," she said. "It changes your perception about having differences and makes you feel like we're all one." Williams also emphasized the value of teamwork and collaboration, noting that people from different countries and backgrounds can work together effectively. At a time when geopolitical conflicts are prevalent, Williams' message of global cooperation is timely. Her experiences on the ISS have given her a unique perspective on the importance of collaboration and the interconnectedness of our planet. When asked about the challenges she faced during her time on the ISS, Williams cited uncertainty as the hardest part. However, she found ways to occupy her time by focusing on the nuts and bolts of continuing the mission. She also spoke about the expansion of the private sector in space, noting that humans are capable of adapting to new situations and that the space station is not a hotel, but a laboratory. The talk, attended by Kalpana Chawla's mother and sisters, was a poignant moment for Williams, who has a close association with the Indian-American astronaut. Chawla's eldest sister, Sunita Chaudhry, shared memories of her sister's grit and passion for space, which she had never revealed to their family.
