In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has ordered a man to live separately from his parents and with his wife and nine-year-old daughter, citing excessive parental influence as the root cause of marital conflict. The court's directive aims to help the couple rebuild their relationship and prioritize family harmony. The bench of justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan, after interacting with all family members, observed that the husband's inability to make independent decisions had led to his wife feeling ignored and their daughter suffering as a result. The court noted that the wife was pregnant and stressed the importance of the husband providing complete medical care, including regular visits to the gynaecologist. To facilitate reconciliation, the court ordered the family to reside separately on the first floor of their house for at least three months. The wife's parents were given permission to visit their granddaughter, and the court emphasized the need for mutual respect between family members. The wife was directed to take care of her in-laws if they fall sick or require daily help, even while residing separately. The court also expressed expectations of the husband ensuring no trouble arises from his in-laws and the wife's parents ensuring they do not create trouble in the marital life of the couple. The matter will be taken up again on April 8, 2026, with the parties directed to appear in person, except the wife, whose personal appearance has been exempted due to her pregnancy. The court's order emphasizes the welfare of the couple and their children, rather than adversarial litigation. The bench expects the parties to abide by the order and not create any further trouble for each other, with the husband being urged to take 'utmost care' of the wife during her pregnancy.
