In a move to ensure the implementation of its orders, the Supreme Court has transferred the high-profile rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College to the Calcutta High Court. The case, which sparked nationwide outrage and protests in West Bengal last year, involves the murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor found in the hospital's seminar room on August 9. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma directed the Calcutta High Court to oversee the case, citing the need for local jurisdiction. The apex court had taken suo motu cognisance of the case in 2024 and had been monitoring the investigation and trial. In January, a trial court in Kolkata sentenced the accused, Sanjay Roy, to life imprisonment. The Supreme Court's decision comes as part of its efforts to address concerns related to the safety and well-being of medical professionals. The National Task Force, constituted by the court, had submitted a report recommending measures to prevent such incidents. While the report suggested that state laws were adequate to address minor and serious offenses, the court's move is aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of these recommendations in West Bengal.
