Tagore's Rare Masterpiece Shatters Records with ₹10.73 Crore Sale

In a historic auction, a 1937 painting by Rabindranath Tagore, 'From Across the Dark', has broken records by selling for ₹10.73 crore. The artwork, part of AstaGuru's 'Historic Masterpieces' auction, saw a 100% sell-out rate with all 87 lots sold, generating over ₹163.65 crore. Tyeb Mehta's 'Untitled' was the top lot, fetching approximately ₹53.54 crore. Tagore's painting, created in June 1937 during his final stay in Almora, showcases his introspective style and explores themes of darkness, light, and grief. The auction also saw records broken by other prominent artists, including Krishen Khanna and Sadanand K Bakre. Khanna's 'The Last Supper' sold for over ₹10.22 crore, while Bakre's 'Monalisa' achieved a record ₹2.30 crore. Walter Langhammer's 'Luminous Coastal Panorama' fetched ₹56.96 lakh, the highest price for his work to date. The auction featured landmark works by pioneering modern Indian artists, including Manjit Bawa and Jamini Roy, many of which were appearing at auction for the first time. The strong response from collectors signifies the growing interest in modernist works with exceptional provenance. AstaGuru's director, Manoj Mansukhani, emphasized the auction house's commitment to showcasing the finest examples of Indian modernism. The auction's success underscores the increasing demand for high-quality, historically significant artworks.
