In a gesture of respect and admiration, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang addressed the National Press Day function, urging the state's press fraternity to remain a fearless, fair, and truthful 'Third Eye' for the people of Sikkim. Speaking at the event, which was postponed to allow his attendance, Tamang emphasized the importance of a free and independent press in a democratic society. The Chief Minister acknowledged the strained relationship between the government and the press during the previous Sikkim Democratic Front government, which saw several incidents of media house vandalism and attacks on individual journalists. However, under the SKM government, Tamang stated that journalism is now built on freedom, trust, and mutual respect. To strengthen and support the press fraternity, the SKM government has taken several initiatives, including financial assistance, recognition as frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and other benefits such as a building for the Press Club of Sikkim, a 17-seater vehicle, health insurance, a pension scheme, and annual grants. Tamang emphasized that a journalist's dignity and independence must be protected, and that his government is committed to supporting and strengthening the press as part of its responsibility towards the media. The Chief Minister's remarks aim to promote a culture of open communication and mutual respect between the government and the press in Sikkim.
