The Tamil Nadu government has received a reprieve for its farmers, with the deadline for registering in the Centre's Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) scheme extended to December 1. Minister M R K Panneerselvam made the announcement on Saturday, urging farmers to register at e-Seva Centres to obtain their Farmer ID. The PMFBY scheme is being implemented in the state for the 2025-26 Kuruvai, Samba, and Navarai seasons. The Union government had initially waived the requirement for a Farmer Identification Number for the Kuruvai season, following a request from the state government. However, this exemption was later withdrawn on November 25, making the Farmer ID mandatory for insuring Samba paddy crops. Despite the challenges, the state has seen a significant increase in the number of farmers insuring their crops. As of now, 7.95 lakh farmers have insured 19.06 lakh acres, covering about 61% of the cultivated area. The Centre has also approved the guidelines for insuring Samba and Navarai season crops for 2025-26. Panneerselvam appealed to the remaining farmers to complete their registration by December 1 to avail the benefits of the PMFBY scheme. The scheme has already provided ₹697 crore to four lakh farmers in the state, with an additional ₹67 crore expected to be credited once the Centre's share is received.
