In a bizarre case, an 18-year-old graphic designer from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was arrested along with his 18-year-old NEET aspirant friend for allegedly stealing ₹16.17 lakh worth of gold, silver, and diamond jewellery from a shop in Rau police station area on December 22. The accused, who hail from an economically weak background, claimed they were inspired by the 2005 Bollywood film 'Bunty Aur Babli' and planned the theft to make ends meet after the graphic designer lost his part-time job at an IT company due to the adoption of artificial intelligence technology. During interrogation, the duo revealed that they had attempted to sell the stolen jewellery but were unable to get a fair price due to the buyers' perception of their age. The police recovered the entire booty from their possession after the arrest in Bhopal, where they had fled. The case has raised questions about the impact of job losses due to AI and the influence of popular culture on youth. Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrikrishna Lalchandani said that the accused have been identified as 18-year-olds, with one working part-time as a graphic designer and the other preparing for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test.
