A tragic incident marred the Dubai Air Show this afternoon when a Tejas fighter jet, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), crashed during an aerial display. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed that the pilot flying the jet lost their life in the accident. The IAF has issued a statement expressing its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and announcing the formation of a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash. The incident is the second recorded crash of the LCA Tejas, a indigenous aircraft being inducted into the Indian Air Force. The crash comes at a time when the IAF is preparing to introduce an advanced variant of the aircraft, the LCA Mk-1A. The IAF had inducted its first Tejas aircraft in July 2016 and currently operates two Mk-1 squadrons. In a separate incident in March 2024, a Tejas fighter jet crashed near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, but the pilot ejected safely. The IAF is awaiting deliveries of 97 Tejas jets, with the first batch expected to arrive in 2027.
