In a daring operation, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau has rescued an 80-year-old doctor and his family from a trio of cyber fraudsters who had been extorting them with threats of a 'digital arrest.' The elderly doctor, who runs a nursing home in Bhadrachalam, was targeted by the scammers who impersonated CBI officials and demanded sensitive information, including bank account details, from him and his family. The ordeal began when the doctor received a series of WhatsApp video calls from the impostors on November 20. The fraudsters claimed that a bank account linked to the doctor's Aadhaar number was involved in over 100 criminal cases being investigated by the CBI. They ordered the family to maintain hourly video contact and threatened to take action if they informed anyone about the situation. The family's assistant grew suspicious when they stopped responding and failed to attend the hospital. On November 23, they disclosed the coercion to the assistant, who in turn informed the District Cyber Crime Coordination Centre. The authorities promptly intervened, cutting off communication with the fraudsters and preventing a major financial loss. The Cyber Crime Police have launched a detailed technical probe to identify the originators and disrupt the network involved. They are urging citizens to remain vigilant and warning that no police, CBI, or government agency conducts 'digital arrests' or WhatsApp inquiries. The rescue operation is a testament to the effective collaboration between the authorities and the public in tackling cybercrime. The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau's swift action has saved the elderly doctor and his family from a potentially disastrous situation, highlighting the importance of staying safe online and being aware of such scams.
