A 38-year-old farm worker from Uttar Pradesh tragically lost his life in Telangana after a kite string sliced his neck while he was riding a two-wheeler to buy vegetables in Sangareddy district. The incident has sparked an investigation, with authorities initially suggesting the string may not be the banned 'Chinese manja' (synthetic/nylon kite string) often linked to such accidents. According to police, the string became entangled around the man's neck, causing severe bleeding that ultimately proved fatal. Two other people in the area have recently suffered similar injuries from kite strings, prompting Hyderabad City Police to ramp up enforcement against the banned 'Chinese manja' ahead of the Sankranti festival. Telangana banned the string in 2016 due to its threat to humans, birds, and the environment. The use and sale of 'Chinese manja' are strictly prohibited, carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of ₹1 lakh. Authorities have registered over 100 cases and seized the banned item in recent weeks, as part of efforts to curb its sale and use.
