The Supreme Court has directed former Telangana Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) chief T Prabhakar Rao to surrender before the police by 11 am on Friday. Rao is an accused in the phone-tapping case, which involves allegations of misusing SIB resources for political purposes. The apex court's order allows Rao to have food from home and regular medication while in custody. The case dates back to March 2024, when four police officials, including a suspended DSP, were arrested for allegedly erasing intelligence information and phone-tapping during the previous BRS regime. The accused are accused of developing unauthorized profiles of citizens, monitoring them clandestinely, and using them to favor a political party. The Supreme Court had granted Rao interim protection from coercive action in May, but the Telangana High Court later dismissed his plea for anticipatory bail. The Hyderabad court had issued a proclamation order against Rao, which could lead to the attachment of his properties if he fails to appear by June 20.
