A Tripura court has sentenced three Bangladeshi nationals to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹10,000 fine each for violating the Indian Passport Act. The convicts, identified as Mohammad Raihan Miah, Nuru Alam Miah, and Mohammad Mohi Uddin, were arrested in October for entering India without proper documentation. The verdict comes as a significant step in tackling the issue of infiltration at the India-Bangladesh border. According to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, infiltration rates have decreased, and many undocumented immigrants have begun to leave the country. The Border Security Force, in collaboration with the Border Guard Bangladesh, has been working to repatriate infiltrators through legal procedures. The state's porous border, which stretches 856 kilometers, remains a concern. However, the BSF has reported detaining 965 individuals, including 628 Bangladeshi nationals, 57 Rohingyas, and 280 Indian nationals, over the past year for attempting to cross into India without authorization. The court's decision serves as a warning to those attempting to circumvent immigration laws.
