A 24-year-old Unnao rape survivor expressed deep distress on Tuesday after the Delhi High Court granted conditional bail to expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was convicted in the 2017 Unnao rape case. The survivor, who has been living in fear, staged a protest at India Gate, accompanied by her mother and activist Yogita Bhayana. The Delhi High Court suspended Sengar's life sentence, citing that he had already served more than the maximum punishment under the POCSO Act. However, Sengar remains in prison, serving a 10-year sentence for the murder of the survivor's father in 2018. The survivor, who has been granted court-ordered protection, fears indirect threats from Sengar and his associates. She alleged that her husband was beaten by a group of men in Azamgarh, and she suspects Sengar's involvement. The survivor has been living with her two children, a two-year-old daughter, and an 11-year-old son, who has also been receiving threats. The Delhi High Court directed the area DCP to ensure the survivor's protection and the state to provide her accommodation. The CRPF has been assigned to provide security to the survivor. However, her mother expressed fear that even those assigned to protect her daughter could pose a threat. The survivor's father died in police custody in 2018, and her paternal uncle was jailed in an old assault case. She has been advised by her lawyers to approach the Supreme Court to challenge Sengar's bail. The survivor expressed her determination to seek justice and ensure her children's safety. Sengar was convicted in December 2019 for the rape and sentenced to life imprisonment. He received a 10-year sentence for the father's murder in March 2020. The survivor's case has been a long and arduous journey, with multiple setbacks and challenges. Despite the Delhi High Court's decision, the survivor remains resolute in her pursuit of justice and safety for herself and her family.
