A Delhi tribunal has awarded ₹1 crore in compensation to the family of a 37-year-old Uttar Pradesh police constable, Dinesh Kumar, who was killed in a road accident last year. The accident occurred on January 13, 2024, when Kumar's motorcycle was hit from behind by a rashly driven car on the Mathura Bypass Flyover in Aligarh. The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal in Delhi found the insurance company liable for the full compensation amount after noting that the offending vehicle was insured on the date of the accident. The tribunal relied on testimony from an eyewitness and the police chargesheet to reach its verdict. In its judgment, the tribunal rejected the insurance company's argument that the offending vehicle was falsely implicated due to a lack of initial details in the First Information Report. The tribunal noted that the driver and owner of the offending vehicle failed to present any defense or dispute the facts of the case. Considering Kumar's age and his role as the sole breadwinner for his family, the tribunal awarded over ₹1 crore in compensation, including ₹97.38 lakh for loss of dependency. The award is a significant relief for Kumar's family, who will now receive the compensation to cope with the financial impact of his untimely death.
