A 24-year-old National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) aspirant in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district has been arrested for allegedly severing his own foot to secure admission to a medical college through the disability quota. According to police, Suraj Bhaskar, who had failed the medical entrance exam twice, used a machine to amputate his foot at an under-construction house in January. Investigations revealed that Bhaskar had tried to obtain a disability certificate from Banaras Hindu University in October but was unsuccessful. Disheartened, he decided to take drastic measures to ensure admission to a medical college. Police found a diary belonging to Bhaskar, which read, 'I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026.' Bhaskar's girlfriend, who was questioned by police, confirmed that he had been determined to secure admission to a medical college at any cost. The police are currently seeking legal opinion to determine what sections of criminal law can be applied in this case. Bhaskar is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital and is expected to be discharged soon. The incident has raised concerns about the desperation and determination of some students to secure admission to medical colleges. The police have registered a case against Bhaskar for attempted murder and are investigating the matter further.
