The United States Embassy and Consulates in India have shut down from December 24 to 26, 2025, in accordance with a US Presidential Executive Order. This move affects routine consular services, which will not be available during this period. The closure is part of a broader effort to grant federal workers a break, following a prolonged shutdown earlier this year. The order, which also includes Christmas Day as a federal holiday, allows executive department heads to determine which offices and installations must remain open for reasons of national security or public need. As per the executive order, the consulates will resume services on December 26, 2025. This decision follows a similar move made by US President Donald Trump in his previous administrations, as well as by President Biden in 2024. It's worth noting that Christmas is already one of the 11 official federal holidays in the United States, alongside New Year's Day, Memorial Day, and Labour Day. The closure of US Embassies and Consulates in India is a result of this executive order, aimed at boosting morale among federal workers during the holiday season.
