The Narendra Modi government has chosen former Union Minister and BJP leader Dinesh Trivedi as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

Trivedi, a 75-year-old veteran politician, will replace career diplomat Pranay Verma, who moves to Brussels as the Indian ambassador to the EU.

The appointment of Trivedi comes at a time when India and Bangladesh are trying to repair their relationship after the Mohammed Yunus disaster.

Trivedi's appointment is a clear signal from the Modi government that it is not averse to sending political leaders as India's envoys to key countries.

The posting of Trivedi to Dhaka indicates that India will be sending heavyweights to the neighbourhood as envoys, marking the end of an era of an ambassador for good times in the Indian subcontinent.
