Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has taken swift action to address concerns over food and water quality at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) campus in Bhopal, following a series of protests by students. The protests were sparked by allegations of poor quality food and water, as well as the recent death of a first-year student, Neha Sahukar, who allegedly died of tuberculosis linked to unhygienic conditions on campus. The government has formed a committee to investigate these claims, with officials stating that the safety of students is a top priority. District in-charge minister Krishna Gaur emphasized the need for concrete evidence, stating that the government will take further action once food and water samples are tested. The situation took a violent turn on Tuesday night, when students clashed with university authorities, resulting in vandalism and arson. Three students have claimed that they died of jaundice linked to contaminated water and food, although the university registrar has denied these claims. The controversy has been fueled by an email from Neha's father, Sunil Sahukar, who alleged that poor food and negligence contributed to her death. While the veracity of the email has not been verified, it has sparked widespread outrage and calls for action. Second-year students have also come forward, stating that the university administration has been neglecting food quality and clean water availability, forcing many students to purchase water from the market. Despite peaceful protests and requests, the administration has failed to address these concerns. The situation has led to the registration of two FIRs by the Sehore police, one against the hostel warden and five others for allegedly thrashing students, and another against unidentified students for rioting and arson.
