Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla emphasized that the electoral process is built on the faith of citizens, who expect their elected representatives to raise their concerns and work towards resolving them. Speaking at the 86th All India Presiding Officers' Conference in Lucknow, Birla highlighted the importance of the legislature as a forum for the 'last person' to have their voice heard by the government. When casting their votes, citizens believe that their elected representatives will champion their causes and find solutions over the next five years, Birla said. He drew a parallel with the judiciary, noting that people trust courts to be fair and impartial. Similarly, he expects the legislature to function with a positive outlook and constructive approach. Birla underscored the need to strengthen democratic institutions, making them more responsive, transparent, and accountable to public expectations. He recommended increasing the number of legislative sittings, with a minimum of 30 days annually, and engaging in positive, issue-based discussions. This, he believes, will help bring democratic institutions closer to the people and align their functioning with the goal of building a developed India. Praising Uttar Pradesh for its initiatives to strengthen democratic values, Birla emphasized the importance of sustained discussion and dialogue within legislatures. He noted that this would help states move towards development and good governance. With Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Vidhan Sabha speaker Satish Mahana in attendance, Birla's message was clear: voters trust their elected representatives to champion their causes, and it's time for the legislature to rise to the challenge.
