The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed frustration with the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development (UMEED) portal, citing technical difficulties that are hindering the registration of waqf properties across India. Launched on June 6, the UMEED portal aims to create a digital inventory of waqf properties through geo-tagging. However, with a six-month deadline for uploading details of all registered waqf properties, the Board's spokesperson, S Q R Ilyas, has called for an extension, citing the portal's slow speed and frequent crashes. The Supreme Court had earlier refused to extend the deadline, prompting a rush to upload waqf properties details. However, the Board claims that this has made it almost impossible to upload lakhs of properties within the given timeframe. In a letter to the Minister of State for Minority Affairs, George Kurian, the AIMPLB has requested a meeting to discuss the issues and seek a deadline extension. The Board has also reminded the minister that the government had intended for all waqf properties already registered with the waqf boards to be uploaded on the portal, but the portal's technical problems have hindered this process. The AIMPLB has organized workshops and set up help desks across the country to assist with the registration process, but the sheer volume of work remains overwhelming. If an appointment with the minister is granted, the delegation will include the central leadership of the Board as well as the heads of major religious and community organizations. The Supreme Court's refusal to extend the deadline has left many organizations, including AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, seeking alternative remedies in the tribunals before the deadline expires.
