The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. The list includes 144 candidates and was announced on Monday, a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the poll schedule for four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, as opposed to the eight-phased polls that were held in 2021. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, along with that of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu.

According to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the poll body had detailed deliberations and found it necessary to reduce the number of phases and bring it down to an extent where it was convenient for everybody.

The list of BJP candidates for West Bengal includes several prominent names, including Suvendu Adhikari, who will contest from Bhabanipur and Nandigram. The list also includes several newcomers and candidates who have been fielded by the BJP for the first time.

The BJP's decision to release its first list of candidates has sparked interest among political observers and party workers, who are eager to see how the party's strategy will unfold in the upcoming elections.
