The West Bengal government has launched a time-sensitive effort to upload records of Waqf properties to the Centre's UMID portal. The move comes after the Union government set a December 6 deadline for states to submit information on all undisputed Waqf properties. According to officials, district magistrates have been instructed to convene meetings with local religious leaders to explain the uploading process. The state administration aims to set up facilitation centres to provide technical support where needed, ensuring a smooth workflow. This effort is a result of the Union government's amended Waqf Act, which requires mutawallis of 8,063 Waqf estates in West Bengal to register property details on the UMID portal by the given deadline. Although some mutawallis have complained of non-cooperation from the State Waqf Board, the state government is proceeding with the task, citing the lack of a Supreme Court stay on the implementation of the revised provisions.
