Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued a series of urgent directives to senior officials to guarantee social welfare and road safety measures in the face of severe cold weather and dense fog. The directives come after a devastating day on Tuesday, which saw 25 lives lost and 59 people injured in fog-related accidents across the state, with the worst tragedy occurring on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura. The chief minister has instructed divisional commissioners, police and traffic authorities to remain on high alert during periods of smoggy conditions. He emphasized the importance of regular checks on street lights and immediate repairs to faulty lighting to prevent accidents. To streamline arrangements, the CM has directed officials to hold meetings with NHAI and state highway officials. To ensure road safety, the chief minister has ordered increased patrolling on expressways, the deployment of teams at every black spot, and the installation of reflectors on highways and roads. Additionally, cranes and ambulances will be deployed round-the-clock on expressways, and toll plaza staff will warn drivers about fog conditions through loudspeakers. Stringent action will be taken against overspeeding during fog, the statement added. To prioritize welfare measures, the chief minister has instructed officials to make adequate arrangements for the homeless, including sufficient provision of bonfires, heaters, and blankets. Night shelters will be inspected continuously, and managed properly. Special care has also been ordered for cattle, with directions to ensure adequate protection from cold in gaushalas, including arrangements for bonfires. Officials have been instructed to provide all possible relief and assistance to the destitute and needy, and to escort homeless persons to night shelters wherever required. The administration has issued a travel advisory to ensure safe movement during foggy conditions, advising drivers to keep vehicle speed below prescribed limits, use fog lights and low-beam headlights, and maintain adequate distance from vehicles ahead. Motorists have also been advised to install reflector tape on their vehicles.
