Lionel Messi has sparked World Cup anxiety for Argentina after being substituted with a left-leg issue during Inter Miami's match against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

The 38-year-old was taken off in the 73rd minute, but despite initial concerns, Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos attributed the substitution to fatigue rather than a confirmed injury.

Argentina must cut their preliminary squad to 26 players by June 1, and the timing of the incident is enough to make them cautious, especially given Messi's history of hamstring and muscle issues.

Argentina are scheduled to play pre-tournament friendlies against Honduras and Iceland before opening their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16.
