Belgium's Top Hockey Coach Philippe Goldberg Takes the Reins at Soorma Hockey Club

In a significant move ahead of the Hockey India League's second season, Soorma Hockey Club has appointed Belgian hockey legend Philippe Goldberg as its head coach. Goldberg will be joined by Argentine Olympian Ignacio Bergner, who will serve as the team's analytical coach. Goldberg, a European medalist and former coach of Belgium's U21 and senior teams, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to contribute to India's growing hockey landscape. He aims to build a strong team culture that emphasizes discipline, creativity, and sustained performance. Bergner, an Olympian and former coach of Argentina's national teams, brings valuable experience to the Soorma Hockey Club. He was a key member of Belgium's World Cup runner-up and European Championship-winning teams in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Soorma Hockey Club, who finished third in their debut season, has retained most of their core players, ensuring continuity and stability within the team. Technical Director Arjun Halappa praised the new coaching duo, saying their philosophy aligns with the team's playing style. The addition of Goldberg and Bergner is expected to elevate the team's performance in the upcoming season. Soorma Hockey Club will kick off their 2026 campaign against defending champions Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers on January 4 in Chennai, led by Harmanpreet Singh.
