Mumbai: Dhakshineswar Suresh, a 25-year-old from Madurai, has been making waves in the tennis world with his impressive performance in the Davis Cup. With a regulation backhand return down the centre of the court, he won his third consecutive Davis Cup match in straight-sets, beating a higher-ranked opponent.

His latest triumph helped India beat the Netherlands 3-2 last month, securing a spot in the second round of the Davis Cup World Group Qualifiers. Dhakshineswar's success has added weight to the claim of him being the next big thing from India.

However, he is now on the cusp of a major transition. In May, he will graduate from Wake Forest University in the USA and turn professional. Former India No. 1 Somdev Devvarman, who has been mentoring Dhakshineswar, believes that the intensity, number of matches, travel, and quality of opponents in the professional circuit will be a significant challenge.

Dhakshineswar will have to tackle the Futures circuit before making his way to the Challengers and then the ATP Tour. By the time he turns professional, he will be 26. Despite the challenges ahead, Devvarman is confident that Dhakshineswar has the tools to succeed.
