Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has spoken out about the doping scandal surrounding Jannik Sinner, expressing his concerns over the handling of the case and drawing parallels with his own experience of being banned from competing due to his Covid-19 vaccine stance. Sinner, who has been one of the most successful players this year, was suspended for two months after a banned substance was found in his system. However, he was able to compete in the Australian and French Opens due to the timing of his ban. In an interview with Piers Morgan, Djokovic questioned the lack of transparency in the case, particularly the way information was conveyed during the proceedings. He also noted the inconsistency in how the case was handled compared to lower-ranked players. ‘I don’t think Jannik did it on purpose, but the way the case was handled, there were so many red flags,’ Djokovic said. ‘There is the lack of transparency, the inconsistency, the convenience of the ban coming between the Slams – it’s just very odd.’ Despite his criticisms, Djokovic expressed empathy for Sinner, who he has known since the Italian was 13 or 14 years old. He noted that Sinner was a genuine and quiet person who was shocked by the doping allegations. Djokovic also drew parallels with his own experience of being banned from competing due to his Covid-19 vaccine stance. ‘That cloud will follow him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me for the rest of my career,’ he said. Sinner is currently competing in the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, where he is hoping to win a second title. Djokovic, on the other hand, has pulled out of the tournament due to injury concerns.
