Germany edged closer to direct qualification for the World Cup after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Luxembourg on Friday. Nick Woltemade's brace in the second half proved decisive, as the team struggled to find their footing in the first half against their underdog opponents. Luxembourg, ranked 97th in the world, had the better chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Daniel Sinani forcing a desperation save from a corner and chopping just wide with 21 minutes gone. However, Germany's fortunes changed after halftime, with Woltemade breaking through four minutes after the break. Leroy Sane's pinpoint cross from the right found Woltemade, who tapped home for the opening goal. The second goal came 19 minutes later, courtesy of a clever exchange between Sane and Ridle Baku that led to Woltemade's second strike. Despite struggling to find fluency, Germany's win has put them in a strong position to qualify directly for next year's tournament in North America. The top two teams in the group, Germany and Slovakia, will face off in Leipzig on Monday, with Germany guaranteed direct qualification by avoiding defeat.
