India's boxing contingent made a significant impact at the World Boxing Cup Finals, with five boxers, including two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen and reigning 57kg World Champion Jaismine Lamboria, advancing to the finals on Wednesday. The duo joins Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50kg), Pawan Bartwal (55kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg), and Hitesh Gulia (70kg) in the finals, ensuring a total of 15 Indian boxers will compete for gold on Thursday. Nikhat Zareen, who made a return to the international scene after a year-long hiatus due to a shoulder injury, ended her 20-month medal drought with a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Uzbek Gulsevar Ganieva in the 51kg semifinal. The victory was a significant milestone for the 29-year-old, who expressed her happiness at finally breaking her medal drought. Jaismine Lamboria showcased her dominance in the ring, registering a 5-0 win against former Asian Youth Champion Ulzhan Sarsenbek of Kazakhstan in the women's 57kg semifinal. Her impressive performance was marked by flowing combinations and a height advantage that allowed her to evade her opponent's punches with ease. Jadumani Singh Mandengbam delivered the most-crowd pleasing performance of the day, defeating Australia's Omar Izaz by a unanimous verdict in the men's 50kg semifinal. The Indian boxer's relentless aggression, crisp combinations, and sharp uppercuts overwhelmed his opponent, securing his spot in the finals. The Indian contingent will look to build on this momentum in the finals, with Neeraj Phogat (65kg), Jugnoo (85kg), and Sumit Kundu (75kg) bowing out of the tournament, but securing bronze medals in the process.
