Bengaluru: Arjun Erigaisi stunned the chess world by defeating world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in a marathon 119-move blitz game on the final day of the Fide World Teams Rapid and Blitz Championship.

This impressive victory comes just days after Arjun took down Carlsen in the rapid time control earlier in the tournament, showcasing his growing prowess as a chess player.

However, Carlsen struck back with a dominant win over Arjun, while Arjun's teammate Nihal Sarin secured a crucial win over Fabiano Caruana of WR Chess to force tie-breaks.

Despite their efforts, the all-Indian MGD1 side ultimately finished sixth, while WR Chess emerged victorious in the tiebreaks to secure fifth place.

In other notable results, Dragon Chilling, led by former world champion Ding Liren, secured a double win to claim the blitz title and rapid championship, defeating Endgame AI 5-1 in the final.

The bronze medal went to team Uzbekistan, featuring Nodirbek Abdusattorov and World Championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov.

Ding Liren, who made a triumphant return to competition after his 2024 World Championship loss to Gukesh, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, saying, 'It takes long to wait but it is worth it.'
