The NHL has launched an investigation into Mike Babcock's sudden resignation as coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in September 2023, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.
The investigation comes after the Players' Association requested it last week, following reports that the Edmonton Oilers were interested in hiring Babcock.
Babcock resigned from the Blue Jackets less than three months after taking the job, sparking criticism over his requests for personal photos from players.
He has not coached a game in the league since being fired by Toronto in 2019-20, but has a storied career, including a Stanley Cup win with Detroit in 2008 and Olympic gold medals with Canada in 2010 and 2014.
Former players have spoken out about Babcock's old-school tendencies, with some calling them bullying.
