Former PSG sporting director Leonardo has spoken out about Lionel Messi's two-year tenure at the Ligue 1 club, describing it as 'complicated.' Messi joined PSG in 2021 on a free transfer, ending his 20-year association with Barcelona. Despite being one of the greatest players in history, Messi struggled to adapt in France and eventually left to join Inter Miami in 2023. When Messi arrived at PSG, he was expected to form a formidable trio with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, leading the club to the Champions League title. However, their partnership failed to deliver, and Messi was unable to guide PSG past the Round of 16 in the Champions League. Despite this, he helped the club win back-to-back Ligue 1 titles. However, in his final season at PSG, Messi faced criticism from fans, who booed him during matches. Leonardo, who served as PSG's sporting director from 2019 to 2022, attributes the 'misunderstanding' behind Messi's complicated stint to the pressure and expectations that came with joining a new team. He states that Messi was eager to stay at Barcelona but ultimately chose PSG as his new home. This isn't the first time someone has spoken out about Messi's time at PSG. Former PSG midfielder Rafinha recently shared his thoughts on Messi's tenure, saying that the team's star-studded lineup made it difficult for coach to manage. Rafinha also believes that Messi's departure was a blessing in disguise, allowing Inter Miami to benefit from his exceptional talent. Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has been in top form, winning the MLS Supporters' Shield last year and currently leading the team in the regular season with 34 goals. He has recently signed a new contract with the club, which will keep him at Inter Miami until 2028.
