Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has dismissed claims that Cristiano Ronaldo's pursuit of 1000 career goals has become an obsession.

The 41-year-old Al Nassr star is currently on 960 career goals, but Martinez insists that he doesn't see Ronaldo playing with anxiety or intention of reaching the milestone.

'I don't agree with that,' Martinez said. 'If Cristiano had played the European Championship focused on scoring a goal to break another record, the assist against Turkey for Bruno Fernandes wouldn't have happened.'

Martinez also praised Ronaldo's behavior on the pitch, saying that he values his ability to make the right decisions inside the box and provide assists for his teammates.

'A striker isn't just about scoring goals, it's about making the right decisions inside the box,' Martinez said. 'That's what assists are for. And assists are more important than goals, in general.'

Martinez also confirmed that Ronaldo will be back in action for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite recently suffering an injury that has ruled him out for a few weeks.
