New Delhi: In a significant development for Indian women's boxing, Santiago Nieva has been confirmed as the head coach of the elite women's team. Nieva, a Swede-Argentinian with a strong technical background, parted ways with the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) three years ago as the men's team's High Performance Director. He will now lead the women's team for the next three years, including the LA 2028 Olympics. Nieva's appointment comes as the women's team has enjoyed a remarkable year, winning medals at the World Boxing Cup, World Championships, and the World Boxing Cup Final. His global experience and leadership skills are expected to propel the team to new heights. The appointment was confirmed on Wednesday, with Nieva set to join by December 20. The senior National Championships are likely to begin on December 25, and he will be based in NIS Patiala. BFI president Ajay Singh expressed his confidence in Nieva's ability to lead the team to podium success, stating, 'Santiago's technical depth, global experience, and proven leadership fit seamlessly into our long-term vision.' Nieva is excited to work with the senior women's team, citing the immense promise they have shown this year. India's women's boxing team has been on the rise, with Lovlina Borgohain winning a bronze medal at Tokyo 2021. However, the team's performance at the Paris Olympics last year was disappointing, with no medals won. Nieva's appointment is seen as a step towards rectifying this and guiding the team to greater heights at the Olympic level.
