Spain's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign got off to a disastrous start as they were held to a 0-0 draw by debutants Cape Verde in their Group H opener in Atlanta on Monday.
The reigning European champions dominated possession throughout the game but were unable to find a way past 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who produced a series of heroic saves to frustrate Spain.
Cape Verde's low-block defensive display was disciplined and brave, and they remained compact and organised throughout the match, refusing to allow Spain space in the dangerous areas.
Spain had several chances, including a header from Marc Cucurella that hit the crossbar, but Vozinha was equal to the task, making excellent saves to deny Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte.
Despite turning to Lamine Yamal and making additional attacking substitutions, Spain were unable to break down Cape Verde's resolute defence, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
The result handed Cape Verde a memorable first-ever World Cup point, but it also leaves Spain under early pressure in Group H.
