Oslo's Good Knight pub is a haven for chess enthusiasts, featuring rook and knight-shaped kegs, built-in chess boards, and a relaxed atmosphere that attracts even the world's top players, including Magnus Carlsen.
The pub is currently hosting the Norway Chess Open, a major tournament that has drawn Indian grandmasters Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali, and reigning world champion Gukesh.
Good Knight's co-owner Krisotoffer Gressli credits his friend and grandmaster Torbjørn Ringdal Hansen with suggesting the idea of opening a chess pub, which was born out of desperation to find a viable business proposition in Oslo's expensive rental market.
The pub has become a popular spot for chess fans, who can socialize while playing the game, and even catch a glimpse of Carlsen, who occasionally drops by for trivia nights.
Good Knight's relaxed atmosphere is a refreshing change from the usual pub scene, where chess players were often told to put their sets away. Now, with Carlsen as a regular, the pub has become a place where people can be themselves, and even challenge the world champion to a game.
