The Washington Commanders have parted ways with kicker Matt Gay, a 31-year-old veteran with a storied NFL career. Gay signed a one-year, $4.25 million deal with the Commanders in April 2025, just two weeks after being released by the Indianapolis Colts. Despite converting 13 of 19 field goal attempts and all 22 extra-point attempts in 10 games, Gay struggled with long-range kicks, missing two 50-yard attempts in a 16-13 overtime loss to Washington on Sunday. Gay, a seven-year NFL veteran, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 and went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams, where he earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2021 and a Super Bowl ring in 2022. In 2023, he signed a four-year, $22.5 million deal with the Colts, the largest free agent kicker contract in NFL history. During his time in Indianapolis, Gay became the first kicker in NFL history to convert four 50-plus yard field goals in a single game. The release comes as a surprise, given Gay's impressive resume. However, his recent performance may have contributed to the Commanders' decision to let him go. The team will now look to find a new kicker to fill the void left by Gay's departure.
