In the wake of a brutal mob killing, the Bangladesh interim government has pledged to care for the family of 25-year-old Dipu Das, a Hindu garment worker who was beaten to death on December 18. The government's education adviser, CR Abrar, met with Das' family and expressed the state's 'profound sorrow and deepest condolences.' Das' father, Rabi Chandra Das, demanded justice during the meeting, highlighting the family's distress. The government has committed to providing financial and welfare assistance to the family and maintaining close contact with them in the coming period. A total of 12 people have been arrested in connection with the killing. The government reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, stating that allegations, rumours, or differences of belief can never excuse violence. Das' killing sparked widespread protests across the country, including in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh. India also expressed concern over the incident. The lynching occurred amidst heightened tensions following the death of Osman Hadi, a leader of the radical right-wing cultural group Inqilab Mancha. Hadi's death led to a fresh wave of unrest, with mobs setting fire to several offices and cultural organisations. Authorities have urged calm as investigations into both the lynching and the subsequent violence continue.
