Bangladesh is pressing India for the extradition of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, but insists that the issue won't impede the country's bilateral ties with New Delhi. The interim government's Foreign Affairs Adviser, Mohammad Touhid Hossain, emphasized that Dhaka expects Hasina's repatriation 'at the earliest possible time' following her conviction for 'crimes against humanity' related to a brutal crackdown on student-led protests last year. The crackdown, known as the July Uprising, led to the toppling of Hasina's Awami League regime in August 2024, and she subsequently took refuge in India. Hasina was declared a fugitive by a Bangladeshi court and sentenced to death in absentia on November 17. Hossain acknowledged that India needs time to adjust to the new realities, but expressed hope for improved ties between the two countries. India has previously acknowledged receipt of a note verbale seeking Hasina's extradition, but has yet to respond to Bangladesh's latest formal request. The Bangladesh government is also considering taking the matter to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. India has maintained its commitment to peace, democracy, and stability in Bangladesh, and has stated its intention to engage constructively with all stakeholders.
