Canada is bracing for a massive surge in undocumented immigrants, with nearly half coming from India. According to data obtained by immigration consultant Kanwar Seirah, over 1 million work permits expired by the end of 2025, and another 927,000 are set to expire in 2026. This has raised concerns about the social impact and challenges that lie ahead. As work permits expire, holders lose their legal status unless they secure another visa or transition to permanent residency. However, these options have become more restricted due to the Canadian government's tightened immigration rules, particularly for temporary workers and international students. "We've never seen such high numbers of people going out of status in Canada," warned Seirah, who estimates that by mid-2026, at least two million people could be living without legal status, with Indians accounting for roughly half of this number. He described this figure as a "very conservative estimate.
